Professional Experience
VJ's career, spanning a decade, prior to his car crash in Dec 2017 was split between roles in FINance & TECHnology roles:
- 2008-13 - FIN: Global infrasturcuture investment banking, a top Indian value hedge fund, fundraising for a global & fully integrated emerald mine to jewellery business, & global strategy/M&A roles; in Bombay & London.
- 2014-17: TECH (3 Early-Stage VC-led B2C Startups): An Indian movie streaming platform (exited), an Accel funded location-based messaging app, and finally; a content-led conversational commerce platform showcasing 50 of India's best luxury brands across 7 lifestyle categories; all in Bangalore (India's Silicon Valley).
Unfortunately in late 2017, VJ was in a near-fatal car accident en route to pick up his parents from the airport. After a 3 week coma, and a 4 year break (2 years of recovery followed by 2 years of COVID), he moved to Stockholm in early 2022 to manage the rollout of Truecaller's new iOS app (v12.0) as part of the newly setup 0 > 1 iOS team.
Upon managing the rollout of Truecaller's new iOS app (v12.0) making it 10x better (and doubling Truecaller's global iOS users within a few weeks of launch), he started a FINTECH business in London; with an old college friend + ex-colleague!
I have had been very fortunate to have had some incredible opportunities to work with & learn from incredible colleagues within these full-time roles across Bombay, London, Bangalore & Stockholm.
Verifany
Founder & CEO
London, UK
Apr 2024 - Present
Verifany leverages the power of open banking to securely and accurately verify the financial data & credence of individuals. We offer a seamless and user-friendly interface where users can request verification of a party’s financial health with their consent.
In today’s interconnected world, trust is more crucial than ever, especially when it comes to financial interactions. Whether you’re a landlord evaluating potential tenants, a small business vetting new suppliers, or an individual entering a financial agreement, knowing you can trust the other party’s financial stability is key. That’s where Verifany steps in.
Verifany's beta launch is a very simple income verification tool (a common demoniator across most of our use cases). Over time Verifany will evolve to a question/answer ChatGPT style format with the individuals being able to verify other individuals' financial credence as well as correlate and cross verify claims from multiple sources with bank account data.

Truecaller
Product (iOS)
Stockholm, Sweden
May 2022 - Nov 2022
Responsible for the product and managing the workflow of the most recently formed Business Unit - iOS at Truecaller (the world's 14th most downloaded app).
Responsible for managing the workflow of the iOS team (consisting of over a dozen engineers), tasked with rebuilding the iOS app from the ground up as part of the 0 to 1 phase. Responsibilities included managing the Product Backlog, ideating on GTM, and working alongside our world-class team as we completely rebuilt the iOS app making it 10x better! The re-launch of Truecaller on iOS (v12.0) saw us reach our highest-ever MAU's on iOS and doubling our global iOS user base within a couple of months of launch!L'OCCUL
Co-Founder & Chief Product Officer (CPO)
Bangalore, India
Jan 2016 - Jul 2017
India's first luxury conversational commerce platform, L'occul was an invite-only marketplace for UHNIs showcasing unique products & marquee services across 7 lifestyle categories.
I joined L'occul as a Consultant, was then made the Team Lead within 3 months, and a Co-Founder within another 3 before running the operations for a year. I established a pivot towards exclusive experiences and led a team of 12 for over a year to build out the platform and the iOS & Android apps. Over different periods of time, I oversaw the entire team and managed multiple functions including product, design, strategy, brand acquisition, customer acquisition, and marketing.
Unfortunately, after not seeing much traction from our initial users due to a variety of reasons (detailed in the Learnings below), we wound L'occul down in July 2017.
Limitless Venture Holdings, Inc.
Founding Director (seed funded by Accel Partners, India)
Bangalore, India
Jan 2015 - Jan 2016
Built a variety of apps in the messaging space and finally settled on Meet. I built the Meet app from the ground up to solve the problem of planning & coordinating meetups; iterating the MVP over 9 versions while speaking to 300 college kids across 3 colleges in Bangalore, India, alongside our iOS developer & intern.
Over the period, we also experimented with a few other short messaging apps such as Pager & Zapp (for the Apple Watch) but eventually settled on building MEET - as a way to combat WhatsApp groups that get created for the purpose of a meet-up and eventually get very spammy.
After we had run Meet for a few months, data pointed us in the direction of the third and last part of the Meet app, which was seeing your friends and family closest to you on a map and we built another app that did just that - LocoPoco. Eventually, even LocoPoco did not prove to get the kind of traction a messaging platform would need and was wound down but by this time, I'd moved on to take on my next challenge at L'occul.
I was a Director in the Indian subsidiary of Limitless Venture Holdings Inc., Clerom Technologies India Private Limited along with my flatmate, the founder, and an EiR (Entrepreneur in Residence) at Accel Partners.
Bollyverse LLC [EXITED]
VP, Product & Marketing
Bangalore, India
Jan 2014 - Jan 2015
Bollyverse LLC was the world’s first vertically integrated online media and entertainment company serving the diverse range of lifestyle interests of the Indian diaspora. I was a part of the three-member core team at Bollyverse - a Chicago-based startup building the 'Netflix of Indian cinema' with over 4,000 South Indian regional titles.
Developed a new product and the technical architecture along with our outsourced development team and also negotiated the best streaming deal with Akamai in India at the time.
Bollyverse reverse merged with Reelbox in 2015. While they loved the mobile app we'd built; they decided instead to continue with their own streaming service, reverse merging our content library within their existing streaming service.
Grant Thornton International
Manager, Global Strategy & Development
London, UK
Jul 2012 - Mar 2013
Second hire at the newly established three-member Global Strategy and Development (Internal M&A) team, set up in early 2012 to double Grant Thornton International's global revenues from US$4bn to US$8bn, as part of 'Ambition 2015', at the firm's international headquarters in London.
As part of the core three-member team, we worked on multiple global level deal mandates as well as streamlining the M&A process for member firms interlinking our eight global functions. Our small team of 3 worked on an extensive proposal to merge a top global network (ranked in the Top 10, but outside of the Top 5) along with Grant Thornton International (#5) but the deal didn't quite work out despite six months of effort, evaluating the synergies the global operations of both entities could provide.
EmeraldWorld International
Chief of Staff
Bombay, India & London, UK
Jan 2010 - Jul 2012
Worked with two very senior, industry veterans, serial entrepreneurs / Co-Founders as the only full-time employee in London for over two years as we set up a vertically integrated emerald business incorporated in the British Virgin Islands & Cayman Islands. I was responsible for all fundraising activities.
I played a junior but extremely intense role in assisting the founder as we worked out of The Mayfair Hotel and set up & raised capital for two offshore entities - one for exploring emerald mining options in Colombia and the other for downstream cutting & polishing raw emeralds into fine jewellery between Tel Aviv & Bombay.
After raising US$33.3mn over two rounds from a financial and a strategic investor each, I also had the opportunity to spend six weeks in Israel, getting the rough Zambian emeralds (purchased via Gemfield's bumper auction in Hong Kong), cut & polished; ready to be put into fine jewellery.
Malabar Investments
Investment Analyst
Bombay, India
Jul 2009 - Jan 2010
Joined Malabar Investments, alongside Akshay Mansukhani, my Director at UBS in New York. Malabar is a value-investing hedge fund started in late 2008 by a founding member of McKinsey’s private equity practice in NY, seed-funded by four multi-billion dollar funds; and amongst the best-performing Indian funds over the past decade.
Worked on 'The Meadow Report' - a detailed report outlining the public markets in India, during my brief stint at Malabar and learned about the fascinating world of value investing; but soon realized my preference for private companies as opposed to public companies and moved over to EmeraldWorld International in London.
UBS Investment Bank
Analyst, Global Infrastructure & Privatization
India
Jan 2008 - Jul 2009
Part of the 20-member global team; working on multiple cross-border infrastructure deals across the Americas, Europe & Middle East. Amongst the best infrastructure deals teams in the world, we were also responsible for the world's largest single asset monetization - the USD 12.8bn lease of the Pennsylvania Turnpike for our Spanish clients - Abertis Infraestructuras, S.A. bid successfully alongside Citi Infrastructure Investors for a 75-year lease on the toll road.
I wrote a 3,000-word feature titled New Dawn for India towards the end of my Analyst stint at UBS in Jul 2009 for Infrastructure Investor of PEI Media - the holy grail for infrastructure investing globally.
I was also nominated by my Director in London, for the UBS Thank You Award for Operational Excellence.
